Accessing Superannuation

It is recognized that weight above a healthy range is associated with a number of medical conditions. The effect of these conditions and extremes of weight ( BMI>40) is known to be associated with reduced life expectancy. As weight loss surgery is not yet readily available in Public Hospitals, the Australia Government allows early access to patients or their family member’s superannuation covers the costs involved with bariatric surgeries. This may only apply to established surgical options and may not be applicable to newer endoscopic treatments.

You will need to submit an application to Australian Tax Office, requesting the early release of your super fund. A support letter needs to be attached to this application from your General Practitioner and your Specialist. This process can take around 3 weeks and up to a further 6 weeks for funds to be released from your superannuation fund.

To find out more about accessing superannuation to pay for medical expenses please visit Australia Department of Human Services.
