In Australia, the cost of a gastric balloon procedure ranges between $5,000 and $9,000. The total cost will be determined by the type of gastric balloon you choose, the clinic you visit, and the experience of the medical professional performing the procedure.

The total price is made up of the balloon, the insertion, the removal, along with any follow-up care that’s required. Medicare does not cover gastric balloon procedures; however, some private health funds may partially cover some of the costs involved in the procedure. Many clinics will also provide payment plans to make repayments more accessible.

In theory, yes, it is possible to lose 30kg with a gastric balloon, but the results from the procedure will vary from person to person and their commitment to strong dietary and lifestyle changes. Those who have a higher starting weight can definitely lose up to 30kg, but long-term success will come from your ability to change your habits, and it won’t come from the gastric balloon alone.

Gastric balloons are temporary, non-surgical tools to aid weight loss by helping you feel fuller with less food. For example, the Allurion balloon lasts about 4 months, Orbera up to 6 months (Orbera 365 up to 12), and Spatz3, which is adjustable, can stay for up to 12 months. The gastric balloon can be uncomfortable but is generally not painful

If you are interested in getting a free surgery done from a public health facility, you should consult your GP. They should be able to direct you to a Medicare funded bariatric facility (Obesity and Metabolic clinics) where there are waiting times and certain qualifying criteria that must be met. If you are a holder of a Private Health Insurance, weight loss surgery may be covered under your insurance. Depending on your cover, you may still incur some out-of-pocket expenses.
