Healthy Weight

Making a commitment to maintain a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your health and well-being. Maintaining a healthy weight has important benefits, not only on how you feel and look, but also for reducing the risk of a number of health conditions.

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can be a difficult task. Losing weight the healthy way is not quick. Many weight loss books and crash diets often suggest unhealthy ways to lose weight and won’t help you maintain weight loss in the long term.

All our programs are designed to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Initial weight loss is achieved by modifying your nutrition patterns and moderate exercise changes. Fitness becomes increasingly important when maintaining weight loss. A healthy mindset provides the foundation for habit development in both the initial weight loss and long term weight maintenance phases. It is important to give attention to your comorbidities during this process.

Despite these measures, some find it hard to achieve their goals, don’t give up! There are various other options available to help you to achieve these goals. Speak to our nurse practitioner for an initial assessment to find the best program that suits your individual needs. Ideal weight may differ based on your ethnicity and height. Calculate your BMI to find out if your weight is within the healthy weight range.

Get Your BMI

BMI compares your weight to your height, and is calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in metres squared).

It gives you an idea of whether you’re ‘underweight’, a ‘healthy’ weight, ‘overweight’, or ‘obese’ for your height. BMI is one type of tool to help health professionals assess the risk for chronic disease. Another important tool is waist circumference. It is also important to understand your other risk factors.

It is recognised that the best way to achieve meaningful long-term weight loss in patients with morbid obesity is with laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.

We provide a multidisciplinary approach to weight loss surgery involving specialist surgeons, physicians and dietitians to help you maintain long-term weight management. A consultation with our bariatric specialist will help determine the most appropriate procedure for you.

There are a number of surgical options available to help you achieve a healthy weight. The most commonly performed surgical procedure is Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy. However, our team will discuss all available options with you including gastric balloon, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.

Our specialist surgeons have experience in helping patients who have failed previous surgery. They offer revision surgery for those who have had complications or weight regain related to previous operations, particularly laparoscopic band surgery.

Due to our unique multidisciplinary approach to weight management, you can have combined procedures, including removal of a laparoscopic band and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty performed at the same time.

Weight loss surgery is not for everyone. Doctors generally recommend it only for people who:

  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more
  • Have a BMI of 35-40 and also have serious health problems related to obesity such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or severe sleep apnoea
  • Have tried and failed to lose weight by non-surgical means such as diet and
    exercise

There are other established non-surgical methods of weight loss available for patients who do not qualify for surgery or who do not wish to undergo surgery. Please check our other programs to find out more.

There has been significant advances in endoscopic bariatric procedures over the last few years. Gastric Balloon has been available as a non-surgical weight loss option for a number of years with excellent outcomes. HealthyWeight Australia offers two types of non-surgical Gastric Balloon.

Please see our options here.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty has become a popular weight loss option with suitability for patients with a BMI > 30 as it is only a 1-night stay in hospital and has a quick recovery time.

Medical weight management has also seen exciting new developments with the number of proven medical options being approved in Australia.

Our specialist surgeons and endoscopists have experience in helping patients who have had unsuccessful surgeries in the past. They offer revision surgery for those who have had complications or weight regain related to previous operations, particularly laparoscopic band surgery, laparoscopic sleeve or by-pass surgery.

New endoscopic techniques can help patients who have regained weight or have not achieved the desired outcome. Purse-string transoral outlet reduction (TORe) is effective at inducing weight loss and improvement in metabolic comorbidities in patients with poor outcomes after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.

Our surgeons also help patients who have failed gastric band surgery. Due to our unique multidisciplinary approach to weight management, you can have combined procedures, including removal of a laparoscopic band and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty performed at the same time.
