Cholesterol is a type of fat that is circulated in the blood. The body produces cholesterol and it is also found in food that is high in saturated and trans fats. LDL cholesterol is commonly identified as the ‘bad’ cholesterol and HDL as ‘good’ cholesterol.
When blood cholesterol levels are high it can cause fatty build up in blood vessels which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
People with obesity have a higher risk of having high cholesterol. Often in obesity HDL is low and LDL is high.
Lifestyle changes including regular exercise and a balanced diet has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels. There is evidence that losing 5-10% of body weight can reduce and normalise cholesterol levels.
